Most guitarists learn Harmonic Minor as a 7-note scale. I find it much easier to think of it as just two sounds: ✈️ Diminished Tension 🏠 Tonic Resolution When we harmonise C Harmonic Minor, the fully diminished 7th chord on the 7th degree (B, D, F, Ab) is symmetrical. Because of this, the same diminished sound appears (as inversions) on the ♭6th, 4th and 2nd degrees of the scale. That diminished structure represents the tension side of the scale, and can also be heard as G7♭9. Once those four notes are removed, we're left with the tonic triad: C, E♭ and G. 🏠 Resolution. So rather than hearing Harmonic Minor as seven separate notes, we can organise it into two clear sounds: ✈️ Diminished Tension 🏠 Tonic Resolution The same idea works with Harmonic Major too. The diminished tension remains, but the tonic triad becomes major instead of minor.
